India are the new Commonwealth Games mixed team badminton champions

India were the new Commonwealth Games mixed team badminton champions after a 3-1 win over defending champions Malaysia in the gold medal match at the Carrara Sports Centre in Gold Coast, Australia on Monday.

The Indians, were the top seeds while Malaysia, who won the mixed team gold in the last three editions of the Games – in Melbourne (2006), New Delhi (2010) and Glasgow (2014) were seeded second.

India's got off to a winning start when Satwik Rankireddy-Ashwini Ponnappa surprised Malaysia's Rio Olympics silver medal winners Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying with a  21-14, 15-21, 21-15 in the mixed doubles.

K. Srikanth, India's hottest badminton property, made it 2-0 for his team when he defeated former world No 1 Datuk Lee Chong Wei for the first time in five meetings with a 21-17, 21-14 win in 43 minutes in the men's singles.

Malaysia narrowed the deficit by winning the men's doubles through Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong who won 21-15, 22-20 over Satwik Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty.

But that was as far as Malaysia went against the fired up Indians.

Saina Nehwal clinched India's winning point in the women's singles with a 21-11, 19-21, 21-9 win over Soniia Cheah.

Singapore were not able to make a lean sweep of the medals at stake by Asian teams when the fell to England in the playoff for the bronze medal.
