Nepalese Prince takes court

The badminton prince is in town – Nepal's Prince Dahal and the 14-year-old is still celebrating his first international title – the Dubai Junior International Series in Dubai last week.

Prince is in Mandalay, Myanmar for the Badminton Asia Junior Under-17 & Under-15 Championships which began on Wednesday.

The Prince is the top seed in the Men's Singles Under-15 category and is oozing with the confidence of at least reaching the final. He drew a first-round bye and goes into the fray on Tuesday.

The Nepalese face Singapore's Lucas Saw Wei Hao in the second round after the Singaporean battled through a tough three-game encounter against Vietnam's Nguyen Duc Hong Phuc with a 22-24, 23-21, 21-16 scoreline in 44 minutes.

"I am thrilled to bits after winning my first international title (Dubai). I am excited to play in the Badminton Asia Junior meet. It has given me added confidence to go for another title in a spate of a week," said Prince.

Why badminton and not other sports like football or cricket?

"I took up the shuttle sport because my father played the game. I like the challenges in badminton. It is a very skillful sport and it gives you great satisfaction.

"I am still in celebration mood after winning my first international title," added Prince who ruled the badminton courts in his country this year as Nepal's Under-15, Under-17, and the Under-19 champion.

"I feel great. It has also given me the added boost to go for greater things in badminton. The journey has just begun for me. I am aware that I will have mountains to climb to reach my targets."

So fired up is Prince in Mandalay that on Tuesday he trained for nearly three hours after arriving in this ancient city from Dubai.
