India’s Praneeth and Thailand’s Ratchanok win singles titles in Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold

The men's and women's singles winners in the USD120,000 Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold which ended on Sunday were fully stretched by their opponents in the final before laying their hands on the title.

The women's singles was a thriller all way between 22-year-old Ratchanok Intanon and her 21-year-old compatriot Busanan Ongbamrungphan.

It took Ratchanok, a former world champion, a solid 84-minutes in her 21-18, 12-21, 21-16 win over Busanan for the title as the packed Nimibutr Stadium enjoyed a rare all-Thailand badminton treat from the nation's shuttlers.

The men's final was an equally thrilling affair as India's B. Sai Praneeth once again showed his tremendous fighting qualities to down Indonesia's fourth seed Jonatan Christie with a 17-21, 21-18, 21-19 win in 71 minutes.

This is Praneeth's second title in two months after winning the Singapore Open Superseries – when he also staged a remarkable recovery from a set down to beat compatriot K. Srikanth for his first superseries title.

In the process Praneeth became the fourth Indian after Saina Nehwal, Srikanth and P.V. Sindhu to win a superseries title.

There was no joy for Malaysia's third ranked mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie when the fifth seeds, ranked No 33, lost to China's He Jiting-Du Yue in three sets. The Chinese won 21-13, 16-21, 21-12 win in 56 minutes.

Indonesia notched a double in the doubles events – winning both the men's and women's doubles titles.
In the women's doubles Greysia Polii-Apriyani Rahayu outplayed Thailand's Chayanit Chaladcham-Phataimas Chochuwong 21-12, 21-12 in the final.
The men's doubles also went to Indonesia with Berry Angriawan-Hardianto Hardianto easy 21-16, 21-16 winners over Germany's Raphael Beck-Peter Kaesbauer in the final.
