Mixed fortunes for host Thailand in Thomas Cup & Uber Cup Finals

It was a stroll for the Thai women as the host steamrolled German 5-0 in their opening Group B match at Impact Arena, Bangkok on Sunday.


However, the Thai men were edged 3-2 by South Korea in their opening Group B  encounter which went well past midnight.


World No 4 and 2013 world champion Ratchanok Intanon, the darling of Thai badminton, who started the rout with a comfortable 21-12, 21-16 win over 55th ranked Luise Hem in the first singles.


Point number two came from the first doubles, Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajongjai, securing a three-game 21-13, 14-21, 21-10 victory over Isabel Herttrich-Carla Nete.


Thailand cruised to a 3-0 lead in the tie with a 21-12, 21-13 win by Nitchaon Jindapol over Michelle Li in the second singles.


In other matches Puttita Supajirakul-Sapsiree Taerattanachai (2nd doubles) - defeating Johanna Goliszewski-Lara Kaepplein21-14, 21-12 and Busanan Ongbamrungphan (3rd singles), winning 21-13, 21-8 against Fabienne Deprez.

Thailand is seeded fourth in the Uber Cup.


Meanwhile, in the Thomas Cup Group B match, South Korea edged out the hosts 3-2 in a nail-biting thriller that went past midnight.


The Koreans won their points through Son Won-ho (1st singles), Chung Eu-seok-Kim Dukyoung (1st doubles) and Kang Min-hyuk-Kim Won-ho (2nd doubles)
Thailand garnered their points through Kantaphon Wangcharoen (2nd singles) and Pannawit Thongnuam (3rd singles).
