Defending champion and top seed Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei became the latest victim at the Jakarta Convention Center when the world No 1 fell to Thailand's unseeded Nitchaon Jindapol in the women's singles quarter-finals on Friday.
The world No 1 was smothered 21-19, 8-21, 21-17 in 61 minutes which effectively shut the door on the 22-year-old's bid for a fourth superseries title this year, having won the All-England, Malaysia Open and the Singapore Open. Her winning streak began with the Hong Kong Open in November last year before ending the season with the BWF Superseries Grand Finals in Dubai.
There was more drama when world and Olympic champion Chen Long of China was shown the exit in the men's singles when the No 8 seed fell to India H. S. Prannoy in three sets. The Indian, who was promoted to the main draw won t78-minute battle to advance after a 21-18, 16-21, 21-10 win.
The new venue for this year's USD1 million BCA Indonesia Open Premier has taken a toll on the top seeds – which included the defeats of defending men's singles champion Lee Chong Wei and the top seeds in the men's doubles Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi in women's doubles.
Jindapol will now plays Japan's Sayaka Sato in the semi-finals on Saturday. The Japanese upset compatriot and third seed Akane Yamaguchi in another three-set thriller 21-17, 16-21, 21-18 in 62 minutes.
The other semi-final will be a battle between China-born Zhaang Beiwen of the United States and Korea's Sung Ji-hyun. Beiwen, ranked No No 10 upset sixth seed Sun Yu of china 21-15, 21-19 while the fifth seeded Ji-Hyun and ranked No 5 prevailed 21-6, 21-23, 21-14 over China's Chen Xiaoxin after a 66 minute battle.
India's K. Srikanth, who is having a good run in Jakarta, continued his winning form when clinched a straight sets 21-15, 21-14 win over Chinese Taipei's Wang Tzu Wei. Srikanth, a quarter-finalist in last year's Rio Olympics next plays No 2 seed Son Wan-ho of Korea. Wan-ho, ranked No 1 in the world, defeated another Chinese Taipei player Chou Tien Chen (sixth seed) 21-15, 21-17.
World No 1 Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen, the No 2 seeds in Jakarta, advanced to the semi-finals in the men's doubles when they defeated former All-England champions Vladimir Ivanov-Ivan Sozonov of Russia 23-21, 21-11.
Others who made the last four in the men's doubles are Indonesia's Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto and China's Liu Cheng-Zhang Nan and Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen.
In the women's doubles All England champions Chang Ye-na-Lee So-hee of Korea, the third seeds, had to come from behind to clinch a 17-21, 21-13, 21-13 win over Indonesia's Della Destiara Haris-Rosyita Eka Putri Sari.
However, another Indonesian pair Anggia Shitta Awanda-Ni Ketut Mahadewi Istarani kept their country's hopes alive when they knocked out Thailand's Puttita Supajirakul-Sapsiree Taerattanachai after a titanic 74-minutes battle to prevail 13-21, 21-19, 21-11.
China's Chen Qingchen-Jia Yifan ended Europe's challenge when the No 5 seeds gave Olympic silver medallists and No 2 seeds Kamilla Rytter Juhl-Christina Pedersen a 18-21, 21-13, 21-11 beating in 65 minutes.
In the mixed doubles Malaysia's new partnership Chan Peng Soon-Peck Yen Wei, playing in their first tournament sailed into the last four after a 19-21, 21-13, 21-13 win over Chinese Taipei's Ching Yao-Chiang Kai Hsin in 58 minutes. In the semi-finals the Malaysians face Olympic champions Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir who ended Malaysia's number two pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing campaign in straight sets 21-18, 21-16..
