SHAH ALAM: Tang Yuanting and Yu Yang emerged as women's doubles champion of the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open 2016 after they overcame their South Korean opponents in straight sets in the final today.
The South Korean pair of Jung Kyung Eun-Shin Seung Chan were clearly no match for the world No. 7 partnership of Yuanting and Yu Yang, who were determined to win their first piece of silverware this year. They had missed out at the All England where they finished runners-up.
In a battle which lasted for more than 40 minutes, Yuanting and Yu Yang, the former 2014 India Open champs, played the long rallies to trap their South Korean opponents. In the end, Kyung Eun-Seung Chan could not keep up and fell 21-11 in the first set. It was better in the next set but they still went down 21-17 in the second.
"This is the first time we have played this South Korea pair (Kyung Eun-Seung Chan). There were some difficulties with the wind but we adjusted to it well," said Yuanting.
For the losing pair, they took their defeat gracefully and said: "It is a very good experience for us playing in this competition. Sure we might have won but we have still some way to go yet to be the world's best.
"Our combination is getting better but we have to polish some aspects of our game to be able to consistently challenge the top pairs."
