Indonesia miss out on regaining Thomas Cup

KUNSHAN: Indonesia narrowly missed out on regaining the Thomas Cup after a closely contested final battle with Denmark here today. The fight went to the final tie where young Ihsan Maulana Mustofa fell to the experienced Hans-Kristian Vittinghus.

Indonesia, 13-time winners of the Thomas Cup, fell behind twice but managed to draw level at 2-2. Then 13th ranked Vittinghus defeated 31st ranked Ihsan in the decider to hand Denmark the crown for the first time.

Denmark, who were finished runners-up on eight occasions, won the final thanks to their singles players. World No.4 Viktor Axelssen snatched the opener when he beat No. 8 ranked Tommy Sugiarto 21-17, 21-18.

Indonesia charged back and won the first doubles through Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan who defeated Mads Pieler Kolding-Mads Conrad Petersen 21-18, 21-13.

Indonesia fell behind again when world No. 5 Jan O Jorgensen beat Anthony Sinisuka Ginting (ranked no. 23) 21-17, 21-13. 

The Indonesians refused to give up and were back on level terms when Angga Pratama-Rickey Karanda Suwardi (world No. 12) swept past Kim Astrup-Anders Skaruup Rasmussen 21-16, 21-14.

Then, Vittinghus sealed the win for the Danes when he got past Ihsan.Related
