JAKARTA: Indonesian youngster Jonatan Christie captured the biggest scalp of his career when he slayed five-time world champion Lin Dan in the second round of the BCA Indonesian Open here Thursday.
The 19-year-old Jonatan, presently ranked 19th in the world, stunned the double Olympic champion with a powerful display that Lin Dan could not match.
It took Jonatan 36 minutes to beat Lin Dan 21-12, 21-12 to set-up a battle with Thomas Cup winner, Jan O Jorgensen, in the next round. Jonatan has been in the spotlight ever since his stunning run in the Malaysia Open Premier Series where he made the semifinals.
Another young Indonesian player, Ihsan Maulana Mustofa also made it through today when he defeated Huang Yuxiang, a qualifier, 21-18, 21-15. Ihsan wll meet England's Rajiv Ouseph next.
With Chen Long, and now Lin Dan out of contention, the battle for the singles will shift to Malaysia's second seeded Lee Chong Wei.
The world No. 2 cruised into the quarters with a smashing 21-10, 21-13 win over Hong Kong's Angus Ng Ka Long. Chong Wei will face China's Wang Zhengming in the next round.
In the women's singles, China's Li Xuerui, the third seed, was another big name to crash out after second seeded Ratchanok Inthanan made a premature exit in the opening round.
Xuerui went down to Chinese Taipei's hardworking Tai Tzu Ying who won 21-18, 21-18. She will be up against All England champ, Nozomi Okuhara in the quaterfinals. Nozomi, the fith seed, advanced after easing past Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour.
In the men's doubles, the world's top ranked pair, Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong continued their charge forward, this time brushing aside local pair, Marcus Fenaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamulo. The Koreans won 21-15, 21-19.
The mixed doubles saw Chinese topseeds, Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei and third seeds, Ko Sung Jyun-Kim Ha Na, advancing into the quarterfianls.
