Australian Open winner Hans-Kristian Vittinghus was dumped out of the USD300,000 Yonex Japan Open in Tokyo in the first round on Wednesday by China's Qiao Bin.
Qiao Bin, ranked 45 in the world, who was promoted to the main draw from the qualifying roundson Tuesday won the 80-minute battle against the towering Dane for an upset 23-25, 21-12, 21-14 win over the world No 10.
His win earned him a plum tie against world No 1 and top seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia. The Malaysian, fresh from winning the silver medal in the Rio Olympics, eased into the second round with a 21-14, 21-13 win over Thai veteran Boonsak Ponsana in only 36 minutes.
The battle of the day, however, was between Taiwan's Hsu Jen-hao and China's fourth seed Tian Houwei. The Taiwanese sweated out a 7-21, 21-14, 21-12 win in a marathon 91 minute match.
Jen-hao will face Germany's Marc Zwiebler in the second round. The German won his first round match against Korea's Jeon Hyeok-jin 21-11, 21-14.
Another shock on the first day's play was the defeat of world No 9 and seventh seed Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia. Tommy fell to a 15-21, 7-21 defeat at the hands of Chinese qualifier Shi Yuqi, winner of the Indonesia Masters last week, in 31 minutes.
India's eighth seed K. Srikanth defeated compatriot, qualifier P. Kashyap 14-21, 21-14, 23-21 in a 62 minute. He faces another compatriot Ajay Jayaram , 21-19, 23-21 winner over Indonesia's Sony Dwi Kuncoro, in the second round.
Second seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, who won the bronze in Rio Olympics, romped to a 21-16, 21-11 win over Hong Kong's Vincent Wong Wing Ki while India's H. S. Prannoy showed Malaysia's second ranked player Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddi the exit with a 23-21, 19-21, 21-18 win in 69 minutes.
Japan had a good day in the women's singles with defending champion Nozomi Okuhara leading the charge into the second round. The second seeded All-England champion outplayed Denmark's Line Kjaersfeldt 21-13, 21-6 in 30 minutes.
Last year's runners Akane Yamaguchi was also on a winning mode with 21-13, 21-14 win over Hong Kong's Yip Pui Yin. Other Japanese who cleared the first round matches were qualifier Natsuki Nidaira who beat Thailand's Porntip Buranaprasertsuk (15-21, 21-19, 22-20), Sayaka Sato, Aya Ohori, Ayumi Mine and Sayaka Takahashi.
Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon, began her title quest with a 21-16, 21-12 win over Hong Kong's Pai Yu Po. Ratchanok, a former world No 1, won three back to back Superseries titles – the India Open, the Malaysia Open and the Singapore Open.
The men's doubles saw the biggest upset when China's top seeds and world No 4 Chai Biao-Hong Wei lost 17-21, 17-21 to unknown German pair Mark Lamsfuss-Marvin Emil Seidel in 34 minutes.
