It was a day of mixed fortunes for Malaysia in the singles in the Celcom Axiata Malaysia International Series in Putrajaya on Sunday.
Malaysia celebrated the women's singles title through 18-year-old S. Kisona while it was heartbreak for Cheam June Wei in the men's singles.
Kisona, ranked 190, came back from a set down to outplay top seed Lim Ying Ying 16-21, 21-15, 21-17 win in the final. Ying Ying who is ranked No 49 in the BWF rankings will carry Malaysia's challenge in next month's Sea Games.
It was Kisona's second giant killing feat in Putrajaya. In the semi-finals Kisona beat second seed Lim Yin Fun 22-20, 19-21, 21-17. Kisona was a bronze medal winner in the Asian Youth Games in Nanjing in 2013.
In the men's singles final June Wei could not sustain his momentum in his 19-21, 14-21 defeat to Singapore's Malaysian-born Loh Kean Yew.
"I just could not focus on my game in the final," said June Wei after his defeat but was more than happy to have reached the final in a senior tournament.
Malaysia celebrated two other titles in Putrajaya. In the women's doubles Soong Fie Cho- Tee Jing Yi defeated Thailand's Kittipak Dubthuk-Natcha Saengchote 21-16, 21-17 in 37 for their second title since coming together.
