Japanese duo crashes out to Malaysians

JAKARTA (25 August 2018) – In the first major upset of the day, Malaysian pair of Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, ranked 25th in the world rankings, blasted third seeds, Takeshi Kamura-Keigo Sonodo 21-14, 21-17 in the Asian Games badminton competition at the Istora Senayan this afternoon. The Malaysians, unseeded here, came out fighting and never stopped until it was over.

The Japanese duo’s game today was littered with mistakes and it was no surprise that the lower-ranked Malaysians moved on to the quarterfinals. It was a disappointing end for Takeshi-Keigo who were runners-up in the recent world championship.

Yew Sin-Ee Yi will meet either Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto from Indonesia or Kim Wan Ho-Seo Seung Jae from Korea in the next round tomorrow. Yew Sin said they played their best and were thrilled to have gotten past the Japanese. “It was an unbelievable game, we are happy to have won.”

A disappointed Kamura meanwhile commented that he did not combine well with his teammate today “We had some communication problems on the court. We need to work on this and get ready for the forthcoming tournaments.”

In the women’s singles, Chinese Taipei singles star Tai Tzu Ying remained well on course for the gold with a convincing win over Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi 21-9, 21-14 in the second round today.

Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, who surprised world No. 2 Akane Yamaguchi in the team event, was unable to pull off another upset today, this time against the third-seeded P.V. Sindhu. Sindhu raced to 21-12 before settling for a 21-15 win to seal her place in the quarterfinals.

In the women’s doubles, second ranked pair Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi of Japan had a relatively easy quarterfinal encounter today against Korea’s Kim Hye Bin-Kong Hee Yong. They won 21-10, 21-7 in under 30 minutes to book their place in the semi-finals.

Their rivals will be Indonesia’s fourth-ranked Greysia Polii-Apriyani Rahayu, who had to work overtime to beat Thailand’s Chayanit Chaladchalam-Phataimas Muenwong 18-21, 24-22, 21-16 in a game that lasted almost 90 minutes today.

Matches are still going on with the top seeded players scheduled to play later in the day.
