Two badminton hubs in Myanmar

The capital city Yangon and the ancient city of Mandalay will be the two badminton hubs in Myanmar as the nation bids to take the game to a higher level.

From hosting junior tournaments Myanmar now wants to host bigger tournaments – starting with the International Series next.

Myanmar Badminton Federation (MBF) president Aung Paing confirmed that the game is set to "take new heights" after Myanmar hosting the Badminton Asia Junior Under-17 and Under-15 Championships twice – last year and this year.

Last year's Badminton Asia Junior (U-17 and U-15) was held in Yangon and this year's meet is being at the Mandalar Thiri Multi-Purpose Stadium in Mandalay.

"Yangon will be the host for the International Series," said Aung Paing on the sidelines of the Badminton Asia Under-17 and Under-15 Championships on Thursday.

"Badminton has taken a new turn in Myanmar. We have two badminton hubs in the country…one in Yangon and one in Mandalay. There about 50 badminton clubs in the country now.

"Many school children are playing the sport and we hope to ride on this new wave of interest among the grassroots."

Myanmar also has an Indonesian coach H. Didit to plot their badminton fortunes with an eye on having a player in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
