THE BEST OF ASIA’S JUNIORS: Tan Zhing Yi

 

Tan Zhing Yi is a Malaysian player, currently ranked #20 in BWF’s junior ranking for women’s singles. At 17 years old, she has 28 career wins and is on her way to becoming the best of Asia’s juniors players! 

 

Tan started playing professionally in the junior tournaments in 2017. At the OUE SINGAPORE YOUTH INTERNATIONAL SERIES 2017, Tan made it to the Round of 16, before being eliminated by Japanese player Kaoru Sugiyama 27-25, 8-21, 9-21.

 

In the following year, at the CELCOM AXIATA MALAYSIA INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR OPEN 2018 she competed in both singles and mixed doubles with partner Ooi Yi Hern. At the end of the year, she competed at the SINGAPORE YOUTH INTERNATIONAL SERIES 2018 in singles and women’s doubles. In the women’s doubles event, she made it the Round of 16 with parter Lai Zi Ying. However, it was in the singles category where she she shined. Tan won silver for the first time, reaching the finals before beating defeated by Thai player Krittaporn Jiantanet 17-21, 21-13, 18-21. Despite losing, this was an amazing feat as she fought hard for 3 games and won her first silver medal in an international competition.

 

At the INDIA JUNIOR INTERNATIONAL 2019 she reached the quarterfinals for both women’s singles and doubles, but was defeated by Thai player Atitaya POVANON in the singles category and Pornpicha CHOEIKEEWONG/Pornnicha SUWATNODOM for doubles. She also competed in the BWF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP 2019, SINGAPORE YOUTH INTERNATIONAL SERIES 2019 and BADMINTON ASIA U17 & U15 JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019. Then, at the YONEX – SUNRISE BANGLADESH JUNIOR INTERNATIONAL SERIES 2019, Tan reached the semifinals for both singles and mixed doubles.

 

Now that tournaments have started happening again even though with strict safety measures, we're looking forward to Tan's next achievements!
