Best of Asia: Tai Tzu Ying

Tai Tzu-ying is a badminton player from Taiwan. She was born on June 20, 1994. Tai started playing badminton when she was in third grade in elementary school. Her accomplishments as a badminton player can be seen in the beginning of her career. 

In 2012, she won her first Super Series title at the Japan Open and she made history as the youngest player to win a Super Series title. Tai Tzu Ying even has experienced being number 1 in the world for the women's singles sector and she became the first Taiwanese woman to be ranked number one in the badminton world, from December 2, 2016 until July 25, 2019. Tai Tzu Ying's skills and techniques in playing badminton are unquestionable. She is known to be a master con artist when she enters the field. She is known to often outwit her opponents with her magical punches.

In 2009, during her early days as a badminton player. Tai, who was 15 at that time, started participating in international matches. She won second place during the very first international competition she participated in, at the Vietnam Open. In July 2009, she represented Kaohsiung City for the National Games and advanced to the quarter-finals. Later that year, in December, Tai competed in the East Asian Games representing Chinese Taipei and won one silver medal and one bronze medal. 

With this year's title, Tzu Ying has successfully won three times in a row at the Indonesia Open 2022. Previously, she had brought home the Super 1000 tournament title in the 2019 and 2020 editions. There is no doubt that the Chinese Taipei women's singles player Tai Tzu Ying amazes many people. Moreover, not only has she achieved so many titles by now, she also just earned a doctoral degree. 

Tai Tzu-ying’s parents are regular players in Kaohsiung, their home city. Her father is part of the city’s badminton committee. Actually, her family is supportive and heavily involved in her career as a badminton player. Her mother is acting as her mentor, her dad is helping with logistics, and her sister is helping Tai Tzu-ying as a regular training partner. The big support from her family allows her to focus on building her career in badminton and to achieve more titles in the future. 

Tai Tzu-ying once said, “I'm a badminton player who's been breaking records since childhood.’ We can’t wait to see her snatch more titles at the upcoming tournaments. She is, in fact, one of the best badminton players. We wish her continued success!
