Philippines Repeats Their Success in 1981

The Philippines women’s team made a surprise at the 2023 SEA Games. In a match held at Morodok Techo Badminton Hall, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Monday local time (8/5/2023), the Philippines defeated Malaysia with a score of 3-0.

 

Three Philippines’ Women’s Team scores are scored from two singles and one doubles. The first Filipino singles who won was Mikaela Joy De Guzman who defeated Tan Zhing Yi in two straight games 24-22, 21-18. De Guzman is a badminton player born on October 25, 2001 and 184 in the world. She has never met Zhing Yi, a woman born on August 1, 2003 and ranked 138th in the world. The second singles was Maria Bianca Ysabel Carlos, a 28 year old who won another point for the Philippines by defeating Malaysia's second single, Siti Nurshuhaini, a 19 year old 21-16, 21-18. The points made the Philippines qualify for the semifinals because in the women’s doubles match Alyssa Ysabel Leonardo/Thea Marie Pomar won three games 22-20, 19-21, 24-22 defeating Malaysia. 

 

The game finished with a score of 3-0. In the semifinals, the Philippines will compete against Indonesia, which is placed as the second seed.

 

By qualifying for the semifinals, the Philippines has at least won a bronze medal. This achievement repeated the success of the 1981 SEA Games where they won bronze medal. 

 

Another semifinal will have the first seed, Thailand, against Singapore. In the previous round, Thailand received a Bye. Meanwhile, Singapore beat Vietnam 3-0.

 

In the men’s team, Singapore, led by the 2021 world champion, Loh Kean Yew, advanced to the semifinals after beating the Philippines with a score of 3-1. Loh Kean Yew, now ranked fourth in the world, who took part in the first match, had to fight for 32 minutes to beat Jewel Angelo Albo, ranked 280th in the world. In the semifinals, Singapore will meet Indonesia, which has advanced to the semifinals because it received a Bye.
