Can Chen Long win back to back Singles Gold?

Chen Long managed to maintain his spot. This Chinese player made it through to the quarter final of badminton at Tokyo 2020 Olympic that’s held in 2021. At the Round of 16, Chen Long got past Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia in the rubber set game. After losing in the 1st game 8-21, the 32-year-old turned the table around in the 2nd and 3rd game he led with 21-19, 21-5.

Of all 5 badminton gold medalists in Rio 2016 Olympics, it’s only Chen Long that still plays. The other 4 are not present for various reasons. In women’s singles, Carolina Marin from Spain withdrew due to injury. Men’s Doubles Zhang Nan/Fu Haifeng are no longer a pair. Quite similar with gold medalist in mixed doubles Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir from Indonesia and Misaki Matsumoto/Ayaka Takahashi in women’s doubles.

Chen Long’s victory over Lee Zii Jia made up for his loss at the All England 2020 and also put him in a leading head-to-head count to 3-2. This defeat felt bitter for Lee Zii Jia as he was expected to make a historical move by bringing home gold. It is very unexpected for Lee Zii Jia to go home this early when at the last tournament, All England 2021, he successfully made it as a champion.

Moving on to the quarterfinal, Chen Long is going against Chinese Taipei’’s second seed Chou Tien Chen. Based on previous records, Chen Long won’t have difficulties going through to the semifinals as out of 9 meetings with Chou Tien Chen, Chen Long had never lost.

Aside from Chen Long, another potential champion is Viktor Axelsen. This Danish player had proven in the early 2021 when he won three tournaments: Yonex Thailand Open, Toyota Thailand Open and Swiss Open. At the quarterfinal round of badminton in Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Axelsen will meet Shi Yuqi from China. The previous records are in Axelsen’s favor with 4 wins in 5 meetings with Shi Yuqi.

So many surprises are already happening at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics badminton games. In the men’s singles preliminary round, top seed Kento Momota from Japan had lost and failed to get to the round of 16.

Will we see another surprise in the men’s finals? Don’t miss the quarterfinals games tomorrow!
