Delightful outing for Malaysia in Badminton Asia U-15 men’s singles

Unseeded Dylan Ooi Ding Sheng of Malaysia upset second seed Syed Saker Mohammad Sibgat of Bangladesh to reach the third round in the men's singles
Under-15 in the Badminton Asia Junior Under-17 & Under-15 Championships at the Mandalar Thiri Stadium in Mandalay, Myanmar on Thursday.

The Malaysian debutant will play Kuo Kuan Lin of Chinese Taipei in the third round on Friday but has not set any target for himself in the championships. Kuan Lin beat Korea's Kim Tae-rim 15-21, 21-17, 21-14.

"I don't set any targets for myself in any tournament…I just give my very best. Setting targets is not me as I don't want to put myself under pressure," said the Bukit Jalil Sports School student who hails from Penang.

"It is good to beat a seeded player as I certainly lack experience compared to others. This tournament has turned out to be so good so far for me and I hope to go as far as I can."
And joining him for a place in the quarter-finals is last year's beaten semi-finalist Muhammad Fazriq Mohamad Razif.

Nazriq, the National Schools Under-15 singles and doubles champion overcame a shaky start to beat Hsieh Cheng Feng of Chinese Taipei in straight games 21-19, 21-12 in 32 minutes for a third-round clash against Japan's Shun Shaito who came out 21-14, 21-17 winner over Thailand's Chayakorn Kittikoon.

There was more to come for the Malaysian camp when P. Velayutham carved out a 21-16, 21-17 win over Zaw Lin Htoo to end Myanmar's challenge in the category. Zaw Lin had upset Thai fifth seed Pawin Pongpitakkul in the first round.

The Kulim-born Velayutham, who is the Malaysian Schools Under-15 doubles champion with S. Suneshan, will face India's Upananda Rajkumar for a place in the quarter-finals.

The other Malaysian who cleared the second round hurdle is sixth seed Justin Hoh Shou Wei. Justin defeated Japan's Manato Ukeda 21-17, 21-16.

Meanwhile, newly crowned Dubai Junior International Series champion Prince Dahal of Nepal, who had a first-round bye, moved into the third round with a comfortable 21-11, 21-12 win over Singapore's Lucas Saw Wei Hao.

The Dubai title was his first international title and the Nepalese face India's S. Sankar Muthusamy Subramaniam next. The Indian needed only 21-minutes to ease past Hong Feng of Hong Kong China 21-11, 21-6.
