Ng Ka Long Angus is a badminton player from Hong Kong currently ranked #9 on BWF’s world ranking singles. He is only 26 years old but already has over 291 wins in Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles category combined, making him one of Asia’s best players!
Ng Ka Long’s journey towards success started when he was young, he started playing when he was 7 years old and stated in an interview with BWF that one of his biggest influences to start playing badminton was his father. His passion for badminton led him to participate in many competitions such as the 2010 BWF World Junior Championships where he won a bronze medal for the men’s singles category. It wasn't until two years later (2012) where he came back stronger and won his first gold medal in the Men’s Doubles category defeating Japanese duo Takuto Inoue and Yuki Kaneko.
In the 2015 Bitburger Open, he won his first Grand Prix title. One groundbreaking moment was defeating badminton legend Lin Dan during the 2015 Hong Kong Super Series and making it to the semifinals before facing defeat going against Lee Chong Wei. However, the following year Ng made history by becoming the first home player to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2016 Hong Kong Open, beating India’s Sameer Verma in the final.
Ng expressed in an interview with BWF that winning the Home Championship (Hong Kong Super Series) was a dream come true. “Winning the home championships was very important for me, all through my younger days I watched the Hong Kong Open. Back then, I used to get very excited watching all of the world-class players who gathered in Hong Kong. I hope to play in the competition one day or even win the championship. So, to actually win the championships was like fulfilling my childhood dream”. On top of fulfilling one of his dreams, that particular win also made his nation proud.
In 2018 he reached the finals at the German Open tournament where he lost against Chou Tien-Chen. He was also the runner-up at the Thailand Open tournament and New Zealand tournament in 2019. One of his recent victories was at the 2020 Thailand Masters where he defeated Japanese player Kenta Nishimoto. And the following year he won Silver at the 2021 Thailand Open.
