Singapore Open quarterfinals report

Angus, Akane send world No.1s Chen Long, Carolina packing

SINGAPORE: Remember this player, Angus Ng Ka Long. The Hongkong shuttler who rose to fame, for a shortwhile late last year, when he surprised Chinese star Lin Dan, is back in the headlines again after upsetting wolrd No.1 Chen Long in the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open.

Angus, the 16th ranked player, put the brakes on the topseed earlier today with a smashing 21-14, 21-18 win here. "I stuck to my strategy and it worked. I used my speed to create attacking opportunities," said Angus, who used to be a doubles player previously.

The 21-year-old Angus will now face South Korean Son Wan Ho in the semifinals tomorrow. Should Angus get the past Wan Ho, he could have the chance to battle Lind Dan again in the final, provided the five-time world champ defeats qualifer Sony Dwi Kuncoro from Indonesia.

Sony, who has had a fine run thus far from the qualifiers, defeated Wang Zhengming 24-22, 12-21, 21-16 to earn the right to face Lin Dan tomorrow. Lin Dan defeated Tommy Sugiarto in the quarters today.

In the women's singles, China's Sun Yu surprised sixth seed Sung Ji Hyun of South Korea in three games, 21-15, 19-21, 21-19.

Another major upset today was the defeat of world No.1 Carlina Marin who was sent packing by Akane Yamaguchi, the eight seed. Akane won 13-21, 21-18, 21-18.

In the men's doubles, world No.1 Lee Yong Dae-Yoo Yeon Seong remained enroute to a spot in the final when they defeated Angga Pratama-Ricky Karanda Suwardi 21-17, 21-16.

Topseeded women's doubles duo of Misaki Matsumoto-Ayaka Takahashi also moved on after getting past compatriots Shizuka Matsuo-Mami Naito 21-15, 21-11.

Indonesian topseeded mixed doubles pair of Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir whipped England's Chris and Gabrielle Adcock 21-15, 21-15.
