Swiss Open champ He Bingjiao advances in Singapore

SINGAPORE: China's rising young star, He Bigjiao, got the better of Malaysia Open runner-up Tai Tzu Ying in the first round of the Singapore Open Superseries.

The 19-year-old He Bingjiao, who was the surprise winner of the Swiss Open, shocked Chinese Taipei's seventh seeded Tzu Ying 21-19, 17-21, 17-21 in just under an hour. 

In the recent Malaysian Open, the Chinese youngster dropped out of the first round when she was beaten by India's P.V. Sindhu. She will get her chance to avenge the loss as the two players are down to face each other in the second round.

Meanwhile, Thailand's badminton queen Ratchanok Intanon had an easy 21-14, 21-10 win over Hong Kong's Cheung Ngan Yi in her opening match.

Malaysia's Tee Jing Yi fell at the first hurdle. The Malaysian lost to Thailand's Nitchaon Jindapol 8-21, 14-21.

World No 1 Carolina Marin, who lost her Malaysian Open title last week due to a bad bout of flu and cough was also in winning form when she outplayed Indonesia's Lindaweni Fanetri 21-12, 21-9 in the first round

In another first round match played at night Japan's Sayaka Sato defeated Singapore's Grace Hui 21-11, 21-11.

In the men's singles Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia moved into the second round with a 21-12, 21-18 win over Japan's Kenta Nishimoto in 39 minutes. Others who won in the men's singles included Wang Zhengming of China who beat Frenchman Brice Leverdez 21-16, 21-13,


In the men's doubles, top seeds and hot favourites Lee Yong Dae-Yoo Yeon Seong of South Korea defeated Chinese Taipei's Lee Jhe Huei-Lee Yang 21-12, 22-20 and will meet Malaysia's No 1 pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong in the second round.

Second seeds Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia also advanced after a three-set win over Taiwan's Liao Min-chun-Tseng Min Hao 21-16, 17-21, 21-17.

Malaysian independent pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong were no match for third seeds and Malaysia Open runners-up Chai Biao-Hong Wei of China and lost 13-21, 15-21 in a first round match.
