Indonesia and Malaysia win titles each in Surabaya

Hosts Indonesia and Malaysia won two titles each while China won one in the Victor International Series 2017 which ended in Surabaya on Sunday.

Indonesia won the men's singles and men's doubles while Malaysia did well to win the women's singles and women's doubles with China taking the mixed doubles through Ou Xuanyi-Liu Lin when they upset Indonesia's third seeds Lukhi Apri Nugroho-Ririn Melati.

The men's singles was an all-Indonesia affair with second seed Shesar Hiren Rhustavito through default when compatriot Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka retired midway in the first set. Shesar was leading 11-4 at that stage.

In another all-Indonesia affair Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pangkaryanira and Ade Yusuf Santoso slogged to a 21-18, 16-21, 21-19 win over Kenas Adi Haryanto-Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfani in 60 minutes for the men's doubles title.

Sudirman Badminton Hall in Surabaya will be remembered by Malaysia's 19-year-old S. Kisona for winning her first international title when she stunned Indonesia's third seed Gregoria Mariska.

The unseeded Malaysian came from behind to snatch a 10-21, 21-16, 21-19 win over the Indonesian in an hour-long final thriller.

In the women's doubles final Malaysia's newly formed pair of Tee Jing Yi-Soong Fie Cho made a breakthrough in only their second international tournament – winning a three-set 69-minute battle against Indonesian second seeds Dian Fitriani-Nadya Melati 21-16, 16-21, 21-19.

The Malaysian pair made their international debut at last week's Thailand International Challenge and did well to reach the quarter-finals before losing to Japan's Misako Aratama-Akane Watanabe.
