Thailand's young men's doubles pair Tinn Isriyante-Kittisak Namdash lighted up the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok in the Thailand Open on Thursday with a place in the quarter-finals after handing Denmark's top seeds Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen an embarrassing defeat in the second round.
The Thais showed the much touted Danes the exit with a come-from-behind 18-21, 21-15, 21-19 win in the the hour-long match on a day when Thai top seeds Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk in the men's singles and Ratchanok Intanon in the women's singles also made the last eight.
There was also a pleasant surprise for Malaysia's 94th ranked Soon Joo Ven when he sent another European hope – Germany's second seeded Marc Zwiebler (ranked 19) with a straight sets 22-20, 21-9 win 33 minutes in a third round match.
The Malaysian youngster will now play Hong Kong's Lee Cheuk Yiu for a place in the semi-finals. Cheuk Yiu defeated Malaysian professional Daren Liew 21-15, 14-21, 21-14 in his third round match.
Tanongsak defeated compatriot and 16th seed Suppanyu Avihingsanon 21-17, 21-16 to advance while third seed B. Sai Praneeth, winner of this year's Singapore Open dumped Malaysia's Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin 21-13, 21-18.
Indonesia's fourth seed Jonatan Christie kept his country's flag flying with a 21-16, 21-9 win over Thai 15th seed Khosit Phetpradab while Kantaphon Wangcharoen outplayed Malaysian professional Chong Wei Feng 21-19, 21-18 for a place in the last eight.
In the women's singles former world champion and world No 1 Ratchanok was a three-set winner against Japan's Sayaka Takahashi – prevailing 24-22, 10-21, 21-18 in 68 minutes. Other Thai women who advanced were fifth seed Nitchaon Jindapol and sixth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong.
In the mixed doubles Thailand's top pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai brought more cheer to the home fans with an easy 21-10, 21-9 win over the scratch pair of Yogendran Khrishnan (Malaysia) and Prajakta Sawant (India).
