Indonesia and Malaysia win singles in Sea Games badminton

Thailand were the big winners in the individual events in the Sea Games badminton competition which ended at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday.

Thailand won all the three doubles – the men's and women's doubles and the mixed doubles – while Indonesia won the men's singles and Malaysia the women's singles.

In the team event Thailand retained their women's team gold while Indonesia won the men's team gold. Malaysia settled for the silver in both team events.

Indonesia won the men's singles through top seed Christie Jonatan, defeating second seed Khosit Phetpradab 21-19, 21-10 while Malaysia's 17-year-old Goh Jin Wei was the toast of the host nation in the women's singles.

Jin Wei, the 2015 world junior champion, the bronze medallist in her Sea Games debut in Singapore in 2015, walked away with the gold medal this time after defeating compatriot and her senior Soniia Cheah 21-11, 21-10 in the final.

In the men's doubles Malaysians Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi lost to Thailand's Kittinupong Kedren-Dechapol Puavaranakroh 19-21, 22-20, 17-21 in a match which lasted nearly an hour.

It was an all-Thailand final in the women's doubles which ended in agony for Sapsiree Taerattanachai and for her partner Puttita Supajirakul. Sapsiree, who had earlier won the mixed doubles, had to retire in the second game when she landed awkwardly in the second game and conceded the gold to Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prjongjai who had won the first set 21-16 and were trailing 7-8 in the second.

The mixed doubles also went Thailand's way with Dechapol and Sapsiree clinching the gold in the first match of the day. The Thais beat Malaysia's Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie 21-15, 22-20.
