Satwiksairaj Rankireddy’s Endless Energy

India’s own Satwiksairaj Rankireddy has incredible stamina. He’s made it to the semifinals of the Toyota Thailand Open in 2 different categories.

The 20-year-old athlete has entered the top four in men's doubles and mixed doubles. In men's doubles, Rankireddy is paired with Chirag Sheety and in mixed doubles with Ashwini Ponnappa.

The men's doubles semi final ticket was won thanks to a tight two-game victory (21-18, 24-22) over Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ea Yi. While with Ponnapa, they stopped the 2016 Rio Olympics finalists Chang Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying, 18-21, 24-22, 22-20.

Between the two semi final matches, Rankireddy will have to work harder in the mixed doubles. This is because Rankireddy/Ponnappa, who are not on the seed list, will challenge Thailand's top seed Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai, who won 27-29, 21-15, 21-9 in the quarter-finals over Ko Sung Hyun/Eom Hye Won of South Korea.

Thai pair Dechapol/Sapsiree is also on fire. Last week at the Yonex Thailand Open, they came out as champions.

It’s a different situation in men's doubles, though. Rankireddy/Sheety has a big chance of reaching the final. In fact, they have become a respected pair. Rankireddy/Sheety were able to enter the top 10 in 2019. This achievement made them the first Indian men's doubles pair to enter the top 10 in the world rankings.

In the semi-finals of the Toyota Thailand Open, Rankireddy/Shetty will meet the Malaysian pair Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, who in the quarter-finals won over compatriots Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong.

Interestingly, this match seems like a reunion for Rankireddy/Sheety. Why? This is because the Malaysian pair is coached by Flandy Limpel, the Indonesian coach who formerly trained Rankireddy/Sheety and was successful in helping them reach the top 10 in the world rankings. He stepped down from coaching the Indian team in 2020 and started coaching the Malaysian men’s doubles from then on.

Will Rankireddy make it to both the finals of the Toyota Thailand Open? We hope so. Wishing him all the best of luck today.
