One gold from badminton at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics certainly goes to China. The two representatives of the country, Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong and Wang Yi Lyu/Huang Dong Ping, will meet in the final match which will be held at Musashino Forest Sport Plaza, Tokyo.
In the semifinals held on Thursday (29/7/2021), Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong, who are the top seeds, defeated Hong Kong representatives Tang Chun Man/Tse Ying Suet in straight games 21-16, 21-12. The second match took 33 minutes. For Zheng Si Wei / Huang Ya Qiong, this result made them widen the victory to 8-1.
The pair’s success came after the success of Wang Yi Lyu/Huang Dong Ping. A few hours earlier, the second seed defeated Yuta Watanabe/Arisa Higashino (Japan) 21-23, 21-16, 21-14. This victory meant that Wang Yi Lyu / Huang Dong Ping had won 10 times and only lost once to Japanese pair.
Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong have a better chance of winning gold. They won 13 times over their last 15 meetings. Last time, they defeated Wang Yi Lyu/Huang Dong Ping at the 2020 Indonesia Masters 21-9, 21-9.
With a certain gold in hand, China regains their gold tradition in the mixed doubles. The gold medal was won through Zhang Jun/Gao Ling at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics and Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei at the 2012 Olympics. However, at the previous Olympics, Rio 2016, the gold went to Indonesian representatives Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir.
