THE BEST OF ASIA: Zheng Yu (China)

Zheng Yu is a Chinese badminton player, currently ranked #15 in BWF’s world ranking for women’s doubles (with partner Li Wenmei). At 25 years old, Zheng has 77 career wins in the women’s singles and doubles category, and has recently won several top prizes on the biggest tournaments this year. Because of this, Zheng is one of Asia’s best players!

Zheng started playing badminton very early on in her life, around the year 2003. As a child, she's won local and provincial titles in the mid 2000s; already highlighting her potential to become a top badminton player. This was further proven when she was selected to join the national team in 2010. Such a huge honor for the young player!

As a junior player, Zheng was already reaching the very top of the podium. She won back to back gold medals in the mixed team at the 2011 Asian Junior Championship in India and the 2012 World Junior Championship in Japan.

As a senior player, her career has been off to a good start. In 2018 she participated in many International tournaments including the China, French, Denmark and Singapore Open. Despite not progressing very far in these tournaments, Zheng still won 2 pieces of silverware. At the German Open, Zheng and her partner Huang Dongping reached the final and won silver against Japanese duo Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota. Then, she also grabbed another silver medal with her partner Cao Tongwei against Ayako Sakuramoto and Yukiko Takahata. It was a great effort from her that year that pushed her further in the next.

The following year saw her competing in more tournaments internationally such as the Swiss, All England, Indonesia and Thailand Open. With her partner Li Wenmei, they were able to win a silver medal at the Thailand Masters. They only lost in the finals against Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai. However, her hard work and determination paid off. In 2020, Zheng and won her first senior international title at the 2020 Malaysia Masters with Li Wenmei. They defeated their compatriots Du Yue and Li Yinhui! What an incredible moment for them.

But it was in this year of 2021 where her success took off. Within these past month, Zheng won a staggering 3 gold medals back to back. At the Sudirman Cup, she was part of the mixed team that won China’s 12th title. Then right after at the Uber Cup, she helped her team win the title against Japan, winning 3-1 in the finals. And just recently, Zheng and Huang Dongping won the Denmark Open title against Korean pair Lee So-hee and Shin Seung-chan where they defeated them 21–15, 21–17.

This year saw a spectacular rise of Zheng Yu. We’re so excited to see her go further in her badminton career where we hope she will reach even greater heights.
