Regarded as the most prestigious junior badminton championship, the WONDR Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2025 starts tomorrow at the Manahan Indoor Sports Hall in Solo, Indonesia.
It is the third time in a row that Indonesia will play host to the event, set to be the cauldron for Asian superstars, after organising it in Yogyakarta in 2023 and 2024.
And as always, Indonesia is prepared with Ricky Soebagdja, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, exclaiming that the city of Surakarta is ready to welcome the best shuttlers from Asia.
“The tournament will feature two categories – the Mixed Team events and also the Individual events, which will feature five categories in the Under-19 age group,” said Ricky.
“A total of 322 athletes from across the Asian region will participate.”
A great many players have gone through the Badminton Asia Junior Championships, which first gained a foothold way back in Manila, the Philippines, in 1997.
Incidentally, it was Indonesia’s own Taufik Hidayat who was crowned as the inaugural winner of the Men’s Singles as China romped to three other individual titles that year.
China were winners in the Women’s Singles through Gong Ruina, as Yang Wei and Gao Ling won the Women’s Doubles, while Cheng Rui and Gao Ling picked up the Mixed Doubles.
Malaysia’s Chan Chong Ming and Jeremy Gan scooped up the Men’s Doubles title.
Over the years, some other notable winners were China’s Lin Dan (2000) and Chen Long (2007) in the Men’s Singles and Lee Yong-dae-Cho Gun-woo from South Korea, who were back-to-back winners in the Men’s Doubles in 2005 and 2006.
At the last two editions of the Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Indonesia, China almost made a clean sweep of all titles at stake.
They won eight out of ten titles.
China were also triumphant in the Team event – started in 2006 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – where they have taken the title for a total of nine times.
The WONDR Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2025 is supported by WONDR by BNI, Badminton Asia, VICTOR as the official equipment partner, TVRI as the official broadcaster, Kapal Api, Le Minerale, the Solo City Government, and the Surakarta Community Association (PMS).
