Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn faces a defining test at the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou after suffering a setback in his Group tie on Thursday.

The world No.2 was pushed succumbed in a thrilling three-game encounter, going down 21-11, 18-21, 21-10 at the hands of France’s Christo Popov in a thrilling 74-minute battle. While the defeat could affect his semifinal, Vitidsarn remains firmly in contention with his fate now hinging on a decisive final Group A match against Anders Antonsen of Denmark.

The loss also marked the end of the road for Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie, who bowed out after a second group-stage defeat. Denmark’s Anders Antonsen, meanwhile, kept his campaign alive with a 21-16, 21-14 win over Christie and faces Vitidsarn with a place in the semifinals at stake.

Men’s Singles: Asian Heavyweights Advance With Authority

 

Elsewhere in Group B, Shi Yu Qi of China and Japan’s Kodai Naraoka secured early semifinal qualification. Shi was forced into a physical battle by Chou Tien Chen but showed composure under pressure to prevail 21-11, 19-21, 21-15, while Naraoka continued his composed run with a straight-games victory over compatriot Li Shi Feng (21-16, 21-15).

The duo will now meet to decide the group winner.

Women’s Singles: An, Yamaguchi Set the Standard

In women’s singles, Asia’s leading lights continued to assert control, with An Se Young and Akane Yamaguchi sealing their semifinal places in Group A.

World No.1 An was ruthless against Japan’s teenage prodigy Tomoka Miyazaki, winning 21-9, 21-6 to maintain her remarkable season momentum. The Korean is bidding to cap a year in which she has won 10 of the 13 World Tour events she has entered.

Yamaguchi, the reigning world champion, was made to dig deep before overcoming Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani 22-24, 21-19, 21-13, reaffirming her resilience at the elite level. The two Asian stars will now meet to decide group supremacy in a highly anticipated clash.

In Group B, China’s Wang Zhi Yi became the first player to advance after defeating Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon 21-17, 21-19. The group was reshaped by the withdrawal of Pornpawee Chochuwong due to a recurring left calf injury, leaving Ratchanok and China’s Han Yue to contest the final semifinal spot.

Men’s Doubles: Rivalries Intensify

Asia’s powerhouse pairs continued to dominate the men’s doubles, particularly in Group B, where China’s Liang Wei Keng/Wang Chang again proved a stumbling block for Malaysia’s Aaron Chia / Soh Wooi Yik, defeating the Olympic bronze medallists 21-14, 21-18.

The defeat leaves Aaron and Soh needing a win in their final group match to keep their semifinal hopes alive, extending a difficult trend at the Finals.

India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty, however, confirmed their spots after battling past Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian / Muhammad Shohibul Fikri 21-11, 16-21, 21-11, showcasing their growing consistency at the elite level.

In Group A, Malaysia’s newcomers Man Wei Chong/Tee Kai Mun kept their hopes alive with a composed 21-18, 21-19 win over Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Hsiang Chieh / Wang Chi-Lin, setting up a crucial clash with top seeds Seo Seung Jae/Kim Won Ho of Korea.

Women’s Doubles: Malaysia Breaks New Ground

Malaysia enjoyed a breakthrough moment in women’s doubles as Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan qualified for the World Tour Finals semifinals for the first time, defeating Japan’s Rin Iwanaga/Kie Nakanishi 21-13, 21-18.

The remaining Group A semifinal spot remains contested between China’s Jia Yi Fan / Zhang Shu Xian and Japan’s Yuki Fukushima / Mayu Matsumoto.

In Group B, China’s Liu Sheng Shu / Tan Ning booked their place with a commanding 21-7, 21-10 victory over Korea’s Baek Ha Na / Lee So Hee, leaving the final berth to be decided between the two Korean pairs.

Mixed Doubles: Asian Depth on Display Despite Shock Exit

The mixed doubles produced another twist as Thailand’s top seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Supissara Paewsampran were eliminated following a second defeat, highlighting the depth and volatility of the discipline. The Thai lost to French pair Thom Gicquel/Delphine 14-21, 21-14, 21-18 in their second group tie.

Asian interest remains strong, however, with Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa/Natsu Saito set to battle for a semifinal place, while Group B has already confirmed its qualifiers.

Malaysia’s Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei and China’s Feng Yan Zhe/Huang Dong Ping both advanced, underlining Asia’s continued dominance. Chen/Toh recovered impressively to defeat


Indonesia’s Jafar Hidayatullah / Felisha Pasaribu 17-21, 21-14, 21-15, while Feng/Huang edged fellow Malaysians Goh Soon Huat / Shevon Lai 23-25, 21-11, 22-20.
