All top seeds largely progressed as expected into the round of 16 on Day 2 of the PETRONAS Malaysia Open 2026 as Asia’s leading contenders continued to assert control at the Super 1000 season opener in Kuala Lumpur.
Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn maintained his composed start at the Axiata Arena, easing past Chinese Taipei’s Wang Tzu Wei 21-10, 21-13.
The world No. 2 combined patience with precision to settle into the tournament rhythm, though he must first negotiate a second-round test against Japan’s Koki Watanabe before a potential showdown with rising French star Alex Lanier.

Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, the 2023 Malaysia Open champion, also advanced smoothly, reaffirming her status as a major title contender. China’s Wang Zhi Yi, a semi-finalist here last year, also progressed confidently, building on a strong 2025 season to establish early-season momentum.
In men’s singles, China’s Lu Guang Zu extended his dominance over Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long with a controlled 21-17, 21-15 victory. Lu’s ability to dictate tempo and manage rallies efficiently remains a key asset as the tournament moves into the more demanding knockout phase.

Former world champion and two-time Olympic medallist Pusarla V. Sindhu advanced in straight games over Korea’s Sung Shuo Yun (21-13, 22-20), setting up a compelling round-of-16 clash with Japan’s world No. 9 Tomoka Miyazaki.

Home hopes rested on Leong Jun Hao, who secured a confidence-boosting opening win and now faces Indonesia’s fourth seed Jonatan Christie in the round of 16, a stern test for the world No. 28.
Malaysia’s depth in men’s doubles was reinforced with five pairs advancing into the second round: Aaron Chia–Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin, Arif Junaidi–Yap Roy King, Man Wei Chong–Tee Kai Wun, and independent pair Nur Azryn Ayub–Tan Wee Kiong.

Top seeds Kim Won Ho–Seo Seung Jae of Korea are up against Nur Azryn–Tan while second seeds Aaron–Wooi Yik are set for a tactical contest against a Chinese pairing.
Elsewhere, Ireland’s Nguyen Nhat Nguyen (world No. 31) will aim for an upset against the rapidly improving European talent Alex Lanier, in one of the potential surprises of the round.
