Top seed Mariska blow for Indonesia

Indonesia, who were beaten 2-3 by South Korea in the mixed team final on Tuesday, were dealt another blow when the individual events got underway in the Pembangunan Jaya Raya Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Women's singles top seed Gregoria Mariska withdrew from the individual event as she failed to recover in time after her gruelling singles match in the mixed team final against An Se-young which lasted a 89 minutes.

Se-young won the match 21-19, 7-21, 22-20 – a win which tilted the final in Korea's favour with both teams tied 2-2. Korea, the top seeds won the women's doubles for a 3-2 win.

Mariska came down with body cramps after the match and could hardly walk. Team manager and head coach Susy Susanti said Mariska is in no condition to play in the individual events where she had a first round bye.

Mariska is also Indonesia's hope in next month's Sea Games in Kuala Lumpur.

"It is better for her to withdraw from the junior championships so that she can recover in time for the Sea Games. Mariska is our medal hope in KL," said Susy.

Indonesia's hope of winning the singles title in the junior championships now rests on Sri Fatmawati, the No 8 seed. Sri Fatmawati got off to a winning start with a 21-8, 21-10 win over Sri Lanka's Nayanathara Teshari in the first round.

Meanwhile, Myanmar's Thet Htar Thuzar served a pleasant surprise in the women's singles when she upset sixth seed Chananchida Jucharoen of Thailand 21-19, 12-21, 21-15 in the first round.

There were no major surprises in the men's singles with top seed Lakshya Sen of India easing into the third round with 21-9, 21-9 win over Singapore's Jethro Tan Ruisheng. Lakshya drew a first round bye.

He next plays Sri Lanka's Sewmina Gunatilleke who defeated Vietnam's Vu Minh Phuc 21-14, 17-21, 22-20.

Second seed Lee Chai Hao of Chinese Taipei was equally impressive in his second round match – defeating Myanmar's Hein Si Thu Toe 21-19, 21-9 while third seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand advanced with a 21-0, 21-7 win against Uzbekistan's Abdurasul Khadjaev
