He was the lone Indonesian standing in the finals of the individual events and Christie Jonatan salvaged some pride for his country Indonesia by winning the men's singles gold.
The top seeded Christie defeated second seed Khosit Phetpradap of Thailand 21-19, 21-16 in the final.
"This gold medal means a lot to me and my country. I was the only Indonesian in the final of an individual event and I am glad that I managed to win the gold," said Christie.
In an all-Malaysian women's singles final there was also joy former world junior champion Goh Jin Wei took the gold – defeating her senior Soniia Cheah 21-11, 21-10 in a 31-minute final.
Jin Wei, who won the bronze medal at the age of 15 when she made her Sea Games debut, however, was quick to remind that it was "not an easy match" although the scoreline looked easy.
It was also the same year that Jin Wei won the world junior title in Lima, Peru.
"It was tough and tense playing in the gold medal match," said Jin Wei, who is also the Asean Schools champion.
"I am happy to contribute another medal to Malaysia's gold tally. Of course I am happy because at one stage I was not even sure I would be playing in this Sea Games because I was injured."
Malaysia last won the women's singles gold in the 2003 Sea Games in Hanoi through Wong Mew Choo.
