He went from strength to strength – probably riding on his luck from the time he was promoted to the main draw in the USD400,000 Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open due to some late withdrawals.
The Hong Kong Open finals ended on Sunday at the Coliseum the home fans were treated to an expected treat from the 23-year-old who became only the second home player to win the Hong Kong Open.
Angus Ng Ka Long was the first to achieve the feat in 2016, beating India's Sameer Verma 21-14, 10-21 21-11.
For Cheuk Yiu, there was no looking back when he was "gifted" a place in the main draw to fight the elite. He took off with a first-round 21-14, 21-16 win over Thailand's Sitthikom Thammasin.
This was followed by a 21-9, 26-24 defeat of China's Shi Yugi before knocking out Viktor Axelsen of Denmark also in straight games 21-14, 21-19. In the semi-finals, India's K. Srikanth was blown away 21-9, 25-23.
The umpire may have played a part in his win in the final. Cheuk Yin was declared the winner and the new Hong Kong Open champion – winning 16-21, 21-10, 22-20 against Indonesia's No 8 seed Anthony Ginting in a pulsating 77-minute thriller at the Coliseum.
Ginting, the Asian Games bronze medallist thought he had cleared the shuttle but the umpire faulted him.
Ginting could not believe as the "fault" handed the home favorite the title and the USD30,000 in prize money that came with it. It is Cheuk Yiu's biggest win and his first Super 500 title.
China's Chen Yufei won her second title in two weeks when she clinched the women's singles with a 21-18, 13-21, 21-13 win over Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon in 65 minutes. A week earlier Yufei won the Fuzhou China Open defeating Japan's Nozomi Okuhara 9-21, 21-12, 21-18 in the final.
Unseeded Koreans Choi Solgyu-Seo Seung Jae pulled off a stunner in the men's doubles when they came back from a game down to beat Indonesia's reigning world champions and second seeds Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan 13-21, 21-12, 21-13.
Third seeds Chen Qingchen-Jia Yifah of China battled for 76 minutes to down Korea's Chang Ye Na-Kim Hye Rin 21-11, 13-21, 21-15 for the women's doubles crown.
