THE BEST OF ASIA JUNIOR: Cheng Su Hui & Cheng Su Yin (Malaysia)

Cheng Su Hui and Cheng Su Yin are 18-year-old twin sisters from Malaysia who are making their way to becoming great players. Currently, they are ranked #15 in BWF World Junior Ranking for women’s doubles. Just last month, they both made it to the final round of the German Ruhr U19 International 2021 in two categories: women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

As a women’s doubles pair, they won gold after defeating France’s Clemence Gaudreau/Elsa Jacob in just 34 minutes. Interestingly, the twins have to go against each other in the final round of the mixed doubles category. Cheng Su Yin/Goh Boon Zhe, defeated Cheng Su Hui/Beh Chun Meng in two straight-set 21-15, 21-16.

Su Yin and Su Hui were born only five minutes apart. Their mother, Tan Saik Khim, was a former national badminton player who competed in one of the Uber Cup finals in the 1980s. In an interview with TheStar, Su Hui said that their mother inspires them to be big no matter how hard the journey will be.

They didn’t play as doubles players since the beginning, though. Su Hui started competing at tournaments in 2016 as girls’ singles and girls’ doubles at the Singapore Youth International Series 2016. Su Yin, on the other hand, began playing in tournaments a little later in 2018 where she’s finally competing as a pair with Su Hui at the Badminton Asia Junior U17 & U15 Championships 2018. At that time, the twin pair could only make it to the round of 16 but their perseverance is paying off.

In 2019, the Cheng Su Hui/Cheng Su Yin couple made it to the quarter-finals round of the Junior International Challenge, Jakarta Junior International Series, and Malaysia Junior International Challenge. At the end of 2019, they made it to the semi-final round of Badminton Asia Junior U17 & U15 Championships which was held in December 2019. However, in the mixed doubles categories, Cheng Su Hui won gold with her partner Beh Chun Meng. To top it all off, in the same month, the twin couple won gold at Bangladesh Junior International Series.

Due to Covid-19 pandemic, they weren’t able to compete in as many tournaments in 2020. As a women’s doubles couple, they didn’t get through the qualifying rounds. In the mixed doubles category, Cheng Su Yin/Goh Boon Zhe made it to the quarter-finals of German Junior 2020.

In 2021, they came back and made a big break by winning the German Ruhr U19 International.

Cheng Su Hui and Cheng Su Yin, like many athletes, are aspired to be able to compete in the Olympic Games. Judging from their records, it looks like they’re on track to their Olympic dream.
