Smart Badminton Asia Championships 2022: Crowning the Best Players in Asia

The Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) were formerly known as Asia Badminton Championships up until 2006. The BAC is one of three major continental tournaments in Asia – the other two are the Badminton Asia Team Championship (BATC), and Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship (BAMTC). Previously known as the Asian Badminton Championships, the BAC was first held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1962 and has been held annually since 1991 to crown the best badminton players on the Asian continent. Throughout the history of the Badminton Asia Championships, China holds the most medals, followed by South Korea and Indonesia.

This year, Badminton Asia Confederation is finally able to host the BAC again after the tournament was canceled two times in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Before the two-year break, the tournament was held in Wuhan, China, for five consecutive years from 2015 to 2019.

The upcoming Badminton Asia Championships 2022 will be hosted at Muntinlupa Sports Complex in Manila, Philippines, from April 26 to May 1, 2022. This will be the 40th edition of the tournament. As for Manila, it is their third time hosting the BAC after they previously did in 1961 and 2001.

Top players in Asia are going to compete for the titles of the best player in Asia and gain 12,000 of their BWF World Ranking points. Each country can only send a maximum of 4 representatives per category based on their eligibility.

In the previous BAC which was held in 2019 at the Wuhan Sports Center Gymnasium, three titles were won by Japan, and two titles were won by China. Japanese top players Kento Momota and Akane Yamaguchi won the men's and women's titles, respectively. Japan also won the men's doubles competition, with Hiroyuki Endo and Yuta Watanabe taking first place. Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan of China won the women's doubles event, while Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping of China won the mixed doubles event in Wuhan.
